HOME BIRTHDAY PAGE MEXICO 2009 MEXICO 2014 LIFE LESSON PoP'S PLAYSET STORY

THIS PAGE IS IN MEMORY OF PoP'S DADDY, WHO WAS BORN MAY 28, 1909. GRANDKIDS, THIS IS YOUR GREAT-GRANDFATHER AND THERE IS ONE PICTURE OF YOUR GREAT, GREAT GRANDFATHER.
THOMAS BOYD HARDIN
May 28, 1909 - February 25, 1975

HE WOULD HAVE BEEN BETWEEN ONE AND TWO YEARS OLD HERE. HERE'S THE FAMILY BEFORE POP CAME ALONG....AUNT MARY, UNCLE JIM, AUNT BETTY. WOULD HAVE BEEN MIDDLE 1930's.
WHEN THEY WERE FINALLY ABLE TO HAVE THEIR OWN FARM, PAPAW BUILT HIS MILKING BARN WITH SOME HELP FROM HIS BROTHER AND OTHERS. HERE HE IS WORKING ON THE FOUNDATION IN 1946. THE BARN IS STILL STANDING AND BROUGHT BACK LOTS OF MEMORIES TO POP WHEN HE TOOK THIS PIC IN 2006.
HIS BROTHERS....UNCLE SHORTY, UNCLE JESSE, THEIR DADDY (JAMES MATTHEW HARDIN) AND PAPAW. PIC IS PROBABLY LATE 1940's. MOVING ON UP! NOW WITH A CAR TO CALL THEIR OWN. BEFORE THEN PAPAW WOULD PUT CHAIRS IN THE BACK OF HIS OLD TRUCK FOR HIS MOTHER-IN-LAW AND THE KIDS TO SIT IN WHEN THE FAMILY WENT VISITING ON SUNDAY AFTERNOONS.
THIS IS IN THE YARD OF THE OLD FARM HOUSE ON CHURCH ROAD. THEY TORE THAT HOUSE DOWN IN SUMMER OF 1952 AND BUILT A NEW ONE ON THE SAME SITE, USING A LOT OF THE SAME LUMBER. FOR THOSE THREE MONTHS WE HAD NO COWS, SO WE LIVED IN THAT BARN FOR THE SUMMER.

PAPAW WAS A CUT-UP AND IS SHOWING OFF ON POP'S BICYCLE IN THIS PIC. HE LOVED TO SWIM AND WOULD DO CANNONBALLS OFF THE DIVING BOARD EVEN WHEN HE WAS 50+ YEARS OLD.

HE GOT RID OF HIS MULES (NIG & LOU) AND BOUGHT HIS FIRST TRACTOR..A FARMALL CUB...IN 1947. HE SAID IT SURE BEAT FOLLOWING BEHIND THOSE MULES.

IN 1957 IT WAS HARDER AND HARDER TO MAKE MONEY ON DAIRY FARMS, SO HE SOLD THE FARM AND BOUGHT A GENERAL STORE IN HORN LAKE ON GOODMAN ROAD...RIGHT NEAR THE RR CROSSING. POP WAS GLAD TO LIVE IN TOWN...LOL.

THIS IS WHAT IT LOOKED LIKE INSIDE THE STORE...THE BACK OF THE BUILDING WAS A FIVE ROOM APARTMENT WHERE WE LIVED. POP WAS THERE ONE YEAR UNTIL HE BEGAN COLLEGE. THE POST OFFICE WAS LOCATED TO ONE SIDE OF THE STORE BUILDING. PAPAW WAS THE ORGANIZING FORCE THAT STARTED THE HORN LAKE FIRE DEPT. AND HE SERVED AS ITS FIRST CHIEF UNTIL HIS DEATH IN 1975, AT THE AGE OF 65.
PAPAW ONLY WENT TO ABOUT THE SIXTH GRADE IN SCHOOL, BUT HE EDUCATED HIMSELF IN MANY AREAS AND BECAME A BELOVED LEADER IN THE COMMUNITY OF HORN LAKE...HE WAS ONE OF TWO KEY PEOPLE WHO MADE SURE THAT HORN LAKE BECAME A CITY INSTEAD OF BEING ANNEXED BY SOUTHAVEN, AND HE WAS SERVING AS THE FIRST CITY JUDGE WHEN HE DIED. WHEN HE WAS SELECTED TO BE THE JUDGE, HE WOULD DRIVE TO OLE MISS AND SIT IN CLASSES TO LEARN WHAT HE COULD ABOUT LAW AND HE WOULD SIT IN COURTROOMS IN MEMPHIS TO OBSERVE HOW JUDGES SHOULD CONDUCT COURT PROCEDURES. HE WAS ALWAYS GOING TO DO HIS BEST AT WHATEVER TASK HE WAS GIVEN.
