IN JUNE 2009 A GROUP FROM CHRIST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, MEMPHIS, SPENT A WEEK IN MEXICO AS A SHORT-TERM MISSION TEAM. THEY WENT UNDER THE 'UMBRELLA' OF YUGO MINISTRIES OF ENSENADA, MEXICO. THEIR COORDINATING CHURCH WAS THE SHADOW MOUNTAIN COMMUNITY CHURCH IN SAN DIEGO...WHERE DR. DAVID JEREMIAH SERVES AS THE SENIOR PASTOR.
THE TEAM'S PRIMARY FOCUS WAS TO WORK ON A NEW HOUSE FOR A FAMILY SELECTED BY YUGO. A SECONDARY FOCUS WAS FOR THE TEAM TO INTERACT WITH THE CHILDREN AND TEENS OF THE AREA. PUPPET SHOWS, CRAFTS, GAMES, AND SPORTS WERE USED TO EXPRESS THE LOVE OF GOD AND THE GRACE HE OFFERS IN JESUS CHRIST.
THE TRIP WAS DESIGNED TO BE A 'FAMILY FRIENDLY' EVENT, SO SON, TOMMY AND WIFE, TRISH WERE ABLE TO TAKE OLDER SON, OWEN, WITH THEM. THE FOLLOWING PICTURES WERE TAKEN BY TOMMY, AND I HOPE THEY WILL 'tell the old, old story of Jesus' love' AS IT WAS REVEALED THROUGH THE TEAM THAT WEEK.
BUT FIRST, THIS WAS TOMMY'S IMPRESSION OF WHAT HE SAW UPON ARRIVAL AT THE LITTLE VILLAGE.
'What a hopeless situation! No food. No clothes. No house. Just filth, stench, garbage and dirt! Tons of dirt. How can anyone live like this? These were the first things to run through my mind once we reached our destination Monday morning. It will make you physically hurt to see it firsthand. And, it feels completely hopeless. But, you can't tell these kids that. The amount of joy that radiates from these children is amazing. And, I see that even in the midst of all this great suffering, God is still greater. Thank you Lord for being greater than this place and giving me hope.'--Tommy Hardin
TO ME, THIS PICTURE SUMS UP HOW LIFE, AS A FOLLOWER OF CHRIST, IS TO BE LIVED....HAVING A SERVANT'S HEART....WILLING TO WASH THE FEET OF THE LEAST. (THIS LITTLE GIRL WAS GETTING READY TO GET A PAIR OF SHOES FOR HER SHOELESS FEET..TRISH RE-PRESENTS JESUS TO HER AND HER FAMILY.)
