PoP'S BEEN THINKING ABOUT ALL THE CARS, TRUCKS, AND VANS HAVE BEEN A PART OF HIS LIFE OVER THE YEARS....HIS FIRST VEHICLE WAS A NECESSITY BECAUSE HE WAS DOING THE MILKING FOR PAPAW IN THE AFTERNOONS....PAPAW HAD TAKEN A JOB IN WHITEHAVEN FOR C. B. PERRY WELL DRILLING COMPANY SO HE WASN'T THERE TO HELP....PoP WAS ONE OF A VERY FEW KIDS AT HORN LAKE HIGH TO HAVE HIS OWN VEHICLE IN 1950's....WHICH GAVE HIM A LOT OF WHAT IS NOW CALLED "STREET CRED"...LOL |
AFTER GETTING MARRIED IN 1964, WE ALWAYS HAD A COUPLE OF CARS AND THEY ARE GOING TO BE LISTED BY THE DATE AND PLACE WE HAD THEM AND NOT BY THE YEAR OF THEIR MANUFACTURE.....USING THE INTERNET I HAVE FOUND PICTURES OF ALL AND WILL INCLUDE NOTES AS A REMINDER OF WHEN AND WHERE THEY WERE A PART OF OUR LIVES..... |
My 1949 Ford Pickup was ARMY UNIFORM GREEN and had a '53 V8 engine...it would scat..it had a floor mounted stick shift....I kept it washed and waxed | Papaw got me this 1946 Chevy so I would quit hitch-hiking home from MSU each weekend...it didn't make it all the way thru the first year...threw a rod thru the cylinder wall... | Papaw bought this 1955 Buick (color was horrible...just change the white sections to a bright blue) in Hernando...a Mr. Summers from Olive Branch had traded it in and later tried to buy it back... |
This is the first car that I ever bought on my own money a four door hardtop, 1962 Impala with red interior....working at UP Bank and went one day at lunch to Chip Barwick Chevrolet on Union Ave. (was filled with dealers back then) bought from Mr. Charlie Gooch | For our honeymoon in June 1964, I bought this 1964 Oldsmobile F85 (Bronze colored) because it was airconditioned | Bought this 1968 Impala in '67 because the Olds was giving me trouble.... |
This 1955 Chevy Bel Air became our second car and once belonged to 'Miss' Del Sharp from Horn Lake...We sold it to a cousin, Vernon Thompson, in Columbus...he turned it into a 'show car' for appearances in events. | A 1966 Olds 88 replaced our '68 Impala when its engine locked up on Bertha on her way to classes at Ole Miss where she was getting her Masters...was like new because Mrs. Stewart had driven it as a 'demo'....she got a new one each year....Granddaddy Thompson had told her he wanted the next one she replaced | This '63 Chevy became our second car when we sold the '55 Chevy..bought it from a little old lady in Sardis who drove it very little...She was Mrs. West....it went to Georgia with us. |
The green and white 1972 Chevy Impala was bought just before moving to Georgia. | This beautiful 1994 Dodge Van was bought in Georgia from Poore Motors....luxury interior of red and black fuzzy stuff...had a partition about 3/4 of way back for sleeping quarters...lol...it replaced the '72 Chevy | After seminary and return to Ms. the '63 white Chevy was wrecked, but replaced by an identical car given to us by two great people...Frank and Eoline Jones... |
While in Lula, this 1977 Olds Starfire replaced the '63 Chevy....our first vehicle with an 8 Track tape player....listened to sound track to "Popeye" a lot.... | In Greenville this 1982 Buick Regal replaced the Starfire and it stayed with us almost to the end of our time in Southaven....BILL AND TOMMY LEARNED TO DRIVE IN THIS CAR....AS I PREPARED TO MOVE ON TO TUNICA, THIS CAR WAS GIVEN TO A YOUNG GUY IN FAITH CHURCH.. | The Dodge van stayed behind in Greenville when we 'inherited' 'Gundy' and 'Dandy's' 1982 Cadillac Deville...quite a move on up...AS WITH THE BUICK, ON MY WAY TO A NEW CHURCH, I SOLD THE 'CADDIE' TO A FELLOW WHO WORKED FOR THE CITY OF S'HAVEN ON THE GARBAGE TRUCK...TURNS OUT THAT I KNEW HIS YOUNG WIFE, ADELLE ('MISS' FYLIE PRONOUNCED IT 'A-DELL'), WHOSE PARENTS (JAMES and FYLIE WILLIS) BOUGHT GROCERIES AT DADDY'S STORE IN HORN LAKE... |
A NEAT THING THAT HAPPENED WITH SELLING THE OLD CADILLAC....I WAS ABLE TO FIND OUT THAT THE WILLIS' (IN LAWS OF THE MAN WHO BOUGHT IT) WERE STILL LIVING AND WHERE THEY LIVED ON HORN LAKE ROAD....WENT TO SEE THEM SHORTLY AFTER AND HAD A WONDERFUL VISIT WITH THEM....BIG HUGS AND THEN SITTING AND REMEMBERING....HE HAD WORKED FOR YEARS FOR MR. WALTER SANDERS, ONE OF PAPAW AND MAMAW'S BEST FRIENDS AND WHOSE SON-IN-LAW, CHIGGER THOMAS, SOLD THEM THE GROCERY STORE IN THE SUMMER OF 1957... |
NOW, JUST FOR THE FUN OF IT, AS BEST I RECALL THE FOLLOWING ARE THE CARS THAT WERE BILL AND TOMMY'S UNTIL THEY GOT OUT OF COLLEGE.... |
THIS SPIFFY HONDA HATCHBACK WAS BILL'S FIRST CAR..BOUGHT IN GREENVILLE....INSTALLED A SPEAKER SYSTEM THAT COST ABOUT HALF OF WHAT THE CAR COST....I BELIEVE WE PAID SOME GUY $250 TO PAINT IT RED....IT WAS JUST A HAIR ABOVE A 'BRUSH APPLIED' JOB..LOL | THIS CHRYSLER CONQUEST REPLACED THE HONDA WHILE BILL WAS AT MSU AND LATER BECAME TOMMY'S THIRD CAR AFTER THE BLUE TOYOTA... | SOMEWHERE IN THE MIX CAME THIS BROWN OLDS CUTLASS SIERRA WHICH WAS BOUGHT FROM ANN KIRKPATRICK'S NEIGHBOR IN THE HICKORY HILL AREA (A SAFE AREA BACK THEN) AND IT WAS PASSED ON TO ME WHEN BILL BOUGHT THE EAGLE TALON..... |
BILL'S FIRST JOB OUT OF MSU AND THE FIRST CAR HE PURCHASED ON HIS OWN...AN EAGLE TALON... | BEFORE TOMMY 'INHERITED' THE CHRYSLER CONQUEST, HE GOT THIS USED RED DODGE SPORTY THING, BUT YOU CAN BE SURE IT DID NOT LOOK THAT GOOD....CAME OUT OF AN AUCTION IN JACKSON AND CAME WITH SEVERAL PROBLEMS....MAINLY THE ELECTRIC WINDOWS QUIT WORKING.... | (I THINK I HAVE THE SEQUENCE ON THESE TWO CARS RIGHT)...AFTER THE DODGE, TOMMY GOT THE BLUE TOYOTA CRESSIDA FROM ED WALLS IN SOUTHAVEN, BEFORE GETTING THE CONQUEST... |
LASTLY, WHILE IN TUNICA, WE SOLD THE CONQUEST AND GOT THIS WHITE TOYOTA FOR TOMMY AT A DEALERSHIP IN MEMPHIS...THAT WAS A FUN DAY, GOING FROM ONE USED CAR DEALER TO ANOTHER LOOKING AND 'TESTING'... |
THIS TRIP DOWN MEMORY LANE WAS FUN FOR PoP AND HAS PROVIDED A LOT OF GREAT MEMORIES OF PEOPLE, PLACES, AND THINGS FROM DAYS GONE BY....WOULDN'T SAY IT DEFINES MY LIFE, BUT IT DOES COVER THE PHASES OF IT....DAIRY FARM, UNION PLANTERS BANK, SEMINARY YEARS, AND YEARS OF MINISTRY....ALL BLESSINGS FROM GOD....ALSO HELPED ME TO SEE BILL AND TOMMY AT DIFFERENT STAGES OF LIFE.... |
